THE ’34

A short story on Rhys Gilberts 1934 Ford Tudor.

After a 5am start, one Saturday morning. My brother Josh and I drove to meet Rhys in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria, Australia.

We started out on the wrong side of the perfect day we had thought of, with our planned destination for breakfast not being open when we arrived at 7am and not a glimpse of sunshine in sight. We spent some time in the car park setting up our gear only for our breakfast place to open as we pulled away to start filming.

Not thirty seconds after driving away from the service station we were greeted with the wailing of police sirens as the Tudor was pulled over to the side of the road, not a bad start. No breakfast and now the threat of an unroadworthy certificate on the Tudor. Luckily the police officer appreciated the work that Rhys had undertaken and let us go on our merry way, but warned us not to be caught again.

We then continued to battle wind, rain and fog as we tried to make a good day from a bad start. We drove out to the base of Mt Macedon filming along the way and trying to make the most of our conditions. We got to the first stop point and took some photos whilst Rhys left his lights on… guess you knew where i was going with that. A roll start ensued and off we went again. Half way back into town we pulled over and I hopped in with Rhys and took a drive to our lunch destination, the Holgate Brewery.

Driving in this car can only be described as raw, fun and exciting. You can hear every little movement and noise the car makes. The wind blew through small areas in the side windows and the motor purred along making this one great car to ride in. The experience was a great one, whilst not as polished as some other cars I have been in these factors made this one all that more fun.

We pulled into the Holgate Brewery and took comfort in the fact that some cold beers and a big lunch were about to help finish off what was a fantastic morning in the end. Beer with Banana in it was great, followed by a venison burger with hand cut chips. Stomachs and camera card full we finalised our catch up and rolled out of Woodend happy that we may have achieved what we had planned.

This short is a capture of this moment in time, I hope it serves the moment well.
